Fighting for YOU at the State Capitol!
The Michigan State AFL-CIO constantly works to implement labor's agenda, one set by state convention, the General Board, and consultation with affiliates. State federation officers and representatives testify on legislation and inform legislators, state officials, and other key parties of labor's positions on the issues.
A formal legislative agenda is approved by the General Board at its Legislative Conference, held every two years with the start of a new session by the Michigan Legislature.
Some of our legislative priorities are ones you'd expect: workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, job safety and health, workers' rights. But the state federation is also involved in dozens of issues that affect all workers in both the private and public sector. Some of these are:
Tax Reform – We've led the fight for a tax system that is fairer for low and middle-income people.
Insurance – We've fought for auto insurance reform that cuts premiums without reducing consumer benefits, and for affordable and comprehensive health care.
Education – Establishing equity in school financing and making college affordable for working and middle class kids are two top priorities.
We're also involved in consumer protection, crime control, environmental protection, housing, the rebuilding of our infrastructure, and many other issues that affect all Michigan citizens.
That's because the Michigan State AFL-CIO believes that workers are first and foremost members of the communities in which they live. All that concerns the community concerns the workers, and all that benefits the community benefits the workers. Tips on Writing Your Legislator Tips on Lobbying Your Legislator
