Reaching Out to Asian WorkersFounded in 1992, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO, is the first and only national organization of Asian Pacific American union members. It organizes and works with Asian Pacific American workers, many of them immigrants, to build the labor movement and address exploitative conditions in the garment, electronics, hotel and restaurant, food processing, and health care industries. More than half a million Asian Pacific American workers have joined unions and are seeking better pay, improved benefits, dignity on the job, and a voice in the work place. APALA’s current program areas consist of: Organizing. APALA has recruited and trained hundreds of union members and labor activists in organizing, provided assistance on many organizing campaigns, and sponsored leadership development trainings. Political and Legislative Action. APALA has a long track record of political action, mobilizing voters since 1994 and working to hold elected officials accountable on worker rights, civil rights, and immigrant rights. Community Action. APALA works in coalition with national and local APIA organizations and serves as bridge to the community to educate about the labor movement and raise awareness about worker issues. International Solidarity. APALA has been a leader in establishing ties to unions in Asia by hosting delegations of trade unionists on their visits to the U.S. as well as sending representatives on exchanges to Asia. Backed with the strong support of the AFL-CIO, APALA has thirteen chapters and pre-chapters and a national office in Washington, D.C. |
